Lt. Gen. Martin R. Steele, USMC (Ret.)

President, Veteran Mental Health Leadership Coalition

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and raised in Fayetteville, Arkansas, Lieutenant General Martin R. Steele enlisted in the Marine Corps in January 1965 and rose to three star general over 34 years of service, including two combat tours in Vietnam and service in Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant at age 20, one of the youngest officers in the Corps at the time, and culminated his career as Deputy Chief of Staff for Plans, Policies, and Operations at Headquarters Marine Corps in 1999. Since retiring from active duty, he has made helping the VA innovate its health care for Veterans and their families a central part of his continued service, and was nominated by Senator Mitch McConnell to serve on the VA's Commission on Care in 2015-2016. Today, General Steele serves as President of the Veteran Mental Health Leadership Coalition and Co-Founder and CEO of Reason for Hope, where his leadership has helped unlock millions in funding to advance Veteran mental health treatments."
