Matthew (“Matty”) Borders Roberts

Born and raised in Shelby, North Carolina, Matthew (“Matty”) Borders Roberts is a distinguished Navy SEAL honored with the Silver Star for his extraordinary bravery during Operation Iraqi Freedom. His valor is evident from his courageous actions across 44 direct action missions, including a critical moment on September 12, 2007, when he risked his life to save a fellow SEAL despite severe injuries from enemy fire. He courageously served our country for 20 years.  

Today, Roberts dedicates his life to a new mission, raising awareness and combating the suicide epidemic affecting veterans and service members. He is featured in the documentary In Waves and War, which just made its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival on August 31, 2024. In this film, Matty stands out to support his brothers and advocate for mental health awareness. His ongoing efforts reflect the same courage and dedication he showed during his time in service, and is now making a profound difference in the lives of his fellow veterans.
