Charles Edwards

Charles Edwards is a retired U.S. Air Force Combat Controller who exemplifies resilience, grit, and the power of purpose-driven recovery. On February 26, 2018, while supporting 10th Group Special Forces during combat operations in Paktia Province, Afghanistan, Charles was critically wounded by multiple gunshot wounds. After a short stay at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, he was transferred to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, where his long and painful recovery began.
Just six weeks later, Charles made the extraordinary decision to return to his unit, determined to rebuild both physically and mentally, his way, with his team. Over the next two years, he underwent more than 20 surgeries, splitting his time between Walter Reed and the 23rd Special.
Tactics Squadron. Despite setbacks and systemic challenges within the medical system, he stayed laser-focused on his goal: returning to duty.
Ultimately, Charles faced an impossible decision; remain active but grounded, or retire from service. He chose retirement, which launched a new battle: finding purpose, identity, and direction beyond the uniform.
Raised on the mats, Charles was told he’d never grapple again. But stepping into a Jiu Jitsu gym changed everything. The sport became his path back to self, pulling him from destructive habits and offering peace, discipline, and purpose. Today, he’s a passionate advocate for the healing power of Jiu Jitsu and its role in veteran wellness.
Charles now trains and mentors future warriors through his role at T3I Solutions, bringing his operational experience, mental toughness, and leadership into the next generation of special operations training. His story is one of pain turned into purpose, and a powerful reminder that while the fight may change, the warrior spirit lives on.
